About Greg Ian
"Speak only when your words are more beautiful than silence."
                                                                                                   ~ Rumi

I was fortunate to grow up in a family that embraced the arts, and music has been a part of my life from a very young age. Initially trained on classical piano, my lessons began early on including playing concert piano while my sister danced.  My sister went on to become a Prima Ballerina and left our home in South Africa to dance on the stages of Sadler’s Wells in London at the young age of 16. My curiosity for everything musical continued to grow and I now play multiple musical instruments, including the guitar (acoustic, classical, and electric), piano, sitar, lap steel, ukulele, lute, tambura and veena, basically anything I can get a sound out of. I have played in multiple bands and toured the country playing in music festivals and other large multi-day events.

In 2013 I wrote the music and cut an Instrumental album in collaboration with classic violinist Marta Z and Cellist Erdis Maxhelaku. The album, “Imprints” is available on iTunes.

In 2016 I also did a multi-song collaboration with Higher Authority, a Gospel Group out of San Diego, to record original music in support the Hunhu Heart Project out of Zimbabwe. That music has also been used in other contexts including the support of Dog Rescue efforts after the Louisiana Floods and regularly used by Yoga Teachers in support of their practice.

A turning point came in my life after spending two years at the foot of Arunachala Mountain in Tiruvannamalai India (background picture) and being introduced to Kirtan. The concept of playing music for the “Divine” deeply resonates with me and has been a big shift away from being classically trained and having to play music “perfectly.” The participation of the audience in Kirtan and the vibration created by the collective immersion in the chant deeply connected me to my heart.

I feel immense gratitude to play with Keshava and be in the company of advanced Spiritual practitioners such Prem Das and Tahir. What a gift it is to chant together with our primary purpose being to connect with the Divine, a space we ALL share on the deepest level.
